Emma Robertson has come full circle after taking up her new role as producer of Seven Local News in Townsville.
It is where she started her journalism career in the summer of 1994, as a wide-eyed cadet with the then Sunshine Television Network. Emma went on to work for the Seven Network affiliate on the Sunshine Coast and in Bundaberg, before being lured north again by WIN Television.
At 23, she was appointed news editor in Townsville, but always remained on the road as a reporter.
Covering a series of natural disasters - floods, cyclones and landslides - taught Emma the value of local news in strife-torn communities: information can save lives.
Working in a military town for almost five years also gave Emma a rare insight into the Australian Defence Force. Accompanying troops involved in the international peacekeeping operation in East Timor was undoubtedly the highlight of her career.
Emma wrote, produced and presented a program on the historic tour of duty, entitled Local Heroes.
After the travel bug bit, Emma headed overseas to Canada and Europe. Back home in Brisbane she did a brief but satisfying stint in public relations at Griffith University, before returning to her first love, television news.
In 2001, Emma joined the Seven Local News team in Mackay. Her next challenge at the helm of Seven Local News in Townsville is not daunting: it feels like she is heading home.
Emma has already begun building her new life in Townsville. She and her partner Darren recently moved into their new home at Riverside Gardens, where the kayaking couple can paddle to their hearts' content.
Emma loves travel, a good book, camping and hiking. |
