Mike Smithson has notched up more than a quarter of a century in news and current affairs reporting for the 7 Network, including stints in Europe and war zones.
He started his career at Channel 7 Adelaide before moving to Melbourne where he became chief police reporter for Channel 7, covering such epic stories as the mass Pentridge Prison breakout in the early 80s. After returning to Adelaide, Mike became a weekend news presenter before moving into the current affairs arena with Hinch and the Real Life program. In the early 90's, Mike was appointed the 7 Network European Correspondent and spent much of his time on the Skase-chase, including exclusive coverage of Skase's arrest in Majorca. That assignment earned him the network Logie nomination for best news story.
Other events he covered during the this period included the Lillehammer Winter Olympics, the Romanian orphan crisis and various royal scandals. Mike moved back to Adelaide where he had a stint on the award winning Today Tonight program, before being appointed the state political reporter. His big ticket assignments since include: Network feature reporter at the Sydney Olympics and live coverage on the War on Terror from the Afghanistan border when the first US air strike took place in 2001.
He is also a regular political commentator on Adelaide radio.
