Joanne Desmond joined Seven News in January 2004 as co-anchor for services in Cairns and Townsville.
No stranger to the newsroom, she enjoyed a career spanning 17 years in newspapers, radio and television.
Joanne had an early start in the media while still at school, writing regular articles for her local newspaper and hosting her own radio show at a community radio station.
The hard work paid off when Joanne was offered a cadetship straight from school with a small regional newspaper on the mid-north coast of New South Wales.
After two years doing the local rounds and often doubling as the newspaper photographer, Joanne moved on to a larger newspaper on the Central Coast.
However, her time on the coast was short-lived after she was offered a position at Prime Television, running its Taree news bureau on the mid-north coast of New South Wales.
Within a couple of years, greener pastures beckoned and Joanne spent 12 months as an on-the-road reporter for Network Ten before being offered the plum role of news presenter.
Joanne became a familiar face to the people of North Queensland and outback Australia, with some of her life played out on screen during the nine years she presented local news.
Viewers watched as Joanne became engaged, married husband John and became pregnant with her two boys, Joshua and Kai.
When Seven announced its intention to begin local news services for Cairns and Townsville, Joanne jumped at the chance to return to a role behind the news desk.
