Bruce Abernethy joined Seven News in 1990 near the end of an outstanding career in the SANFL and the AFL. He played a total of 314 games, including 10 state matches and 114 AFL games with North Melbourne, Collingwood and the Adelaide Crows.
Bruce made his SANFL debut with the Port Adelaide Magpies in 1979 and won premierships in his first three seasons. His inevitable departure to the VFL came in 1982 and he played two seasons at North Melbourne before a further three seasons with Collingwood.
After playing seven finals matches with Collingwood and 103 senior VFL games, Bruce returned to Adelaide in late 1986. With the formation of the Adelaide Crows in 1991, he added 11 games to his AFL tally for a total of 114 before finishing his career as a member of Port Adelaide's 1992 SANFL premiership team.
His career is littered with individual awards and he was an All Australian representative in 1987.
Bruce joined Seven News as a sports journalist and three years later took on the role of presenter following the departure of John Casey.
He made an immediate impression by winning a Clear Speech Award and Bruce's on-camera role expanded with the launch of The Crows' Show (later Footy Plus) in 1994.
In 1998, he took on the role of boundary rider for the Seven Network's telecasts of Port Adelaide AFL matches at Football Park.
In addition to his television news role, Bruce has been calling AFL on Triple M radio since 2001 and his television hosting experience was carried to a national level for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, when he presented Tonight at the Games, a nightly program that was a review of each day of the olympics.
