Det. Peter Baker is one tough cop. He brought down The Stalker only to be blown up in the explosion at Jack and Martha's wedding… or so we were led to believe. He was, in fact, taken in to a Witness Protection Program and has just returned to Summer Bay.
When he decided he wanted to become a policeman, Peter came to be regarded as the black sheep of his family. His parents had wanted him to work on the land as they had, and were unreasonably hard on him, disowning him for several years.
Sometime in the 1990s, Peter brought down a prominent mafia-type family, the Gillens. Dennis Gillen vowed to hunt Peter down and kill him in revenge. On hearing that Dennis had been released from prison, the CID decided to 'remove' Peter from society and place him in Protection.
When the explosion happened at Jack and Martha’s wedding, they led everyone to believe that Peter was dead by giving him a drug which induced a coma-like state which, in turn, led the hospital machines to produce false readings.
The first Peter knew of any of these plans was when he woke up two days later. He was outraged, but then learnt that the Gillens were targeting his son Drew to try and get him out of hiding. In a dramatic showdown, Peter saved Drew and Dennis Gillen was killed.
Now Peter is trying to live a normal life and build a relationship with his son.

Pete once had an affair with Dan's first wife (Amanda) which gave the family another reason to reject him. He was once also keen on Dan's current wife, Leah. Some brother Pete is!
Family
Dan is his brother and Drew is his son.
Friends
Having just returned from the dead, Peter’s been too busy patching things up with his family and organising a wedding to make too many close friends again.
