We get to check out Tim Campbell between scenes on a Friday afternoon, at Channel 7 studios in Sydney. He’s just as much the nice guy in REAL life as Dan Baker is in Home and Away. He’s friendly, warm, funny and passionate (especially when you ask him about his pet dog Reggie).

Would Tim describe himself as an extrovert? More of a show-off, he says and if the life he leads when he’s not filming for Home and Away is any indication, he’s a multi-talented show-off!. Not only does he do a lot of MC work at charity events and corporate dinners (he’s booked up for the next three months), he acts, sings and dances, writes sketches and reviews, does whakky voice-overs and performs for live children’s stage shows and has performed in kids’ pantomimes for the past four years. Last year he performed at Carols in the Domain. As well, he’s a sports nut. Where does he get his energy from?

Would you believe that this fun guy was all lined up for a six-year cadetship as an accountant – but after visiting Wonderland thought he’d try out for a role as an entertainer there. Got the job and ever since has been following his true vocation as a performer.

He’s a naturally confident guy – and has always been a performer. In his school days Tim was involved in school musicals, played in the school band, represented his school at State level in swimming and athletics, toured with The Sydney Schools Drama Ensemble and was made School Captain in Year 12.

Tim has always had the attitude that it’s good to “have a go” at things you’ve never tried before – and he loves making mistakes. His advice to anyone is: Don’t be intimidated by making mistakes – sometimes it can take you into another dimension and at least you’re learning something by your own experience. Another tip? He always follows his “gut feeling” and so far, it’s usually proved to be right!

And what of his other life, his commitment to Home and Away? “Working with the cast of Home and Away is terrific – they’re such a good crowd. And co-starring with Ada Nicodemou is a pleasure – we clicked immediately and she’s great fun.”

Tim likes his Home and Away character, Dan Baker. “He’s pretty grounded and has great integrity and yes, I’m a pretty even-tempered guy like Dan myself. But in the scenes with Amanda (his ex-wife) played by Holly Brisley, when I have to get very belligerent towards her, I sometimes apologise to Holly beforehand for how I’m going to act towards her.”

“It’s a great location for filming, Palm Beach, and I enjoy the drive there,” Tim says. Does he get a chance to relax on the beach during filming? “Not with my colouring! Fair skin and red hair! That kind of skin needs special care in the sun.” So Tim doesn’t indulge in the great Australian sport of sunbaking – but he’s a swimming pool fan and regularly swims at pools near home.

Profile

Born: September 27

Star Sign: Libran. “The symbols of the scales for Libra are definitely me, weighing everything up before I make a decision, which makes me inclined to be indecisive – and sometimes worrying what people think.”

Loves: “The arts, but I’m not a huge art head…actually I’m a bit of a sports nut. I’m my own worst critic so have only called myself an actor in the last four years.”

How does Tim kick back after a hard day’s filming? He loves to swim and run with Reggie, his cross border collie dog. Reggie is very much part of Tim’s household and yes, he’s a house dog, but extremely well-behaved. As a boy, Tim had lived next door to a dog trainer and so knew how to train Reggie from the time he got him from the RSPCA. “People say we’re alike, as Reggie is a honey brown, with blond streaks – the same colouring as I am!” Tim has appeared on Sydney Weekender and would love to do a dog show with Reggie starring in it. “If Katrina Warren’s dog Toby can be on TV, so can Reggie!”

Wishes for the future? To go to England and work in a West End pantomime in the Christmas break – he has Home and Away fan mail from England and has never been there. And he’d love to play Dr Frankenfurter in The Rocky Horror Show.
