Hey everyone,
Has this ever happened to you: you have your general ups and downs - getting worried about little things you really can't affect - and then something far, far worse happens and it puts it into perspective for you? Well that happened to me this week – right now none of the little things seem to matter because I almost died!
There was a fire at the school. After being trapped in a classroom once before, being trapped in the school during an emergency has always been a fear of mine and this week it was realised! The worse thing is the fire was deliberately lit! I was on an important call that had to end due to an unscheduled fire drill – until the smoke in the hallways made me realise it wasn’t a drill – it was a real fire! In the confusion of getting everyone out we realised Belle was still inside! Running back I found her in my office (more on that later) but the door closed behind me, locking us both inside! Smoke began to fill the room and we began to panic – we were trying everything to open the window, break the glass, break the door down. The last thing I remember is coughing terribly and feeling sick and claustrophobic before passing out…
When I came to I was outside on the ground, the panicked faces of Cassie, Tony and Brad peering over me – it was Brad who saved us both!
But here’s the strange thing: later when we were at the hospital we got talking and I told him that Flynn died of cancer and he clammed up! It was really odd – I know that for some people the topic of death and illness can be uncomfortable but this was different. Later when we saw each other he acted very strange around me – no longer at ease and friendly, but forced and distinctly uncomfortable. There’s something weird going on there…
Matilda is in hospital – she has been suffering from bulimia and had started to cough up blood! I feel a little guilty that I hadn’t noticed the warning signs, but nothing compared to what Beth is going through – I think she’s taking it particularly badly. Cassie told me she had known for about a week but Mattie had sworn her to secrecy, but ended up telling Beth the truth. Poor thing – apparently Mattie was furious but eventually I know she’ll see Cassie was acting out of love.
New face to the Bay Drew is still causing trouble - he smashed Peter's memorial plaque and then hit Dan! This was after insisting he wouldn’t go to the memorial service, and then showing up after all - this is one confused kid! Just quietly, I hear he is suspected to be the town pyromaniac – there have been a few more fires. I’m in two minds about this myself but I’m more than happy to leave this in the hands of the experts – I trust Jack and those boys will find the guilty party.
My suspicions about Kim and Kit were spot-on – they slept together on their last night along lost in the bush! My heart goes out to Rachel – she found out by accident, while overhearing a conversation between the two over the phone! Fortunately I think she understands the exceptional nature of the circumstances and is willing to forgive Kim.
Oh, and you’ll never believe why Belle was in my office (leading to us both being trapped in the fire) – she was looking through Cassie’s files! She is such a handful that girl. Irene had a quiet word with me about Amanda's new tactics for winning Belle back – Amanda is encouraging Belle to cause rifts in Cassie and Ric's relationship! What a terrible twosome. I have way too much faith in both Ric and Cassie to see this as an actual cause for concern – still, I’ll be keeping my eye on them. Funny though – for all her talk about Ric I really think Drew and Belle make far more sense as a couple…
Must go – Pippa’s woken up from her nap – time to play Mum (does it ever stop?)!
Love Sally
PS. Will find out next week if I get the job as principal of Summer Bay High! Wish me luck!!
