Hi All,
The aftermath of the chopper crash has dominated our hearts and minds this week – still no word about Kim, Kit, Martha, Robbie and Belle. It’s the not knowing that’s the worst, and it’s taking its toll on us all in different ways.
Mr Stewart has been pushing himself too hard, as he tends to do in times of tragedy. I believe it’s a way for him to channel his feelings of grief and helplessness into a positive usefulness – but as the days pass with no word, I felt his frustration growing. I tried to talk to him several times about slowing down, taking more breaks, but of course he wouldn’t hear of it – that is, until a minor heart flutter sent him to the hospital! I was incredibly worried but fortunately it wasn’t serious. Mr Stewart’s spirits were so low – I’d never seen him so beaten. Luckily Morag took him home and gave him a stern talking to – I’m not sure exactly what she said to him but the result was a relief: Mr Stewart returned to form and made a rousing speech that played on the local radio. It reminded us all that we are a town of survivors, and no matter what the elements, fate or outsiders throw at us, Summer Bay can fight and survive. Our loved ones will come home to us.
Other dramas this week took the form of Tasha going into premature labour! Irene told me all about it: the stress of Robbie being missing overwhelming the poor darling and starting early contractions! The doctors administered medication but it was having no effect as Tasha couldn’t control her fear and panic! Everyone was freaking out because a baby born this early would have very little chance of survival. Guess who saved the day – Jack! Even in hospital, you can still count on Summer Bay’s finest to come to the rescue. From his wheelchair next to her bed he took Tasha’s hand and talked her down till her breathing returned to normal and the contractions stopped. It’s good to see those two can be there for each other in this very difficult time.
And of course the messy love triangle between Macca, Cassie and Ric continues to play itself out. Where to begin there? That troublesome Macca did a runner from the hospital in an effort to help find Martha. Of course given his condition he was never going to get far so Ric was forced to go after him, imploring him to stop. It wasn’t long before the two began arguing about Cassie – Ric pointing out if he really loved Cassie he’d go back to the hospital so she wasn’t worried. (While I only get Ric’s side of the story, I must admit I tend to side with him). Ric went to come back out of the bush, but in his hot-headed state slipped and fell down a ravine! The boys were forced to overcome their differences quick smart: Macca busted his stitches pulling Ric out and had to go straight back to hospital!
Both the boys made their feelings clear to Cassie and she came to me to ask me my advice. I reminded her that it’s OK not to be with anyone – I think sometimes the kids here feel like they always have to be in a relationship, whereas sometimes you just need time out to decide what you want and when. I must admit, I’m terrified that Cassie would even consider going back to Macca given their violent history – I find it hard to understand the bond she speaks of with someone who has treated her so appallingly. But luckily brave little Cassie decided to tell Macca she can’t be with him again. Phew!
Too tired to write anymore – what an exhausting week. I hope I have better news to report next week: I read in my stars this afternoon they’ll be several brand new faces crossing my path very soon: something to look forward to!
