What happened in the week June 19 - 23, Eps 4211 - 4215

Check in here every week to see what Sal thinks of all things Summer Bay… Email your feedback to homeandaway@seven.com.au

Hello everyone,

I have lived in Summer Bay all my life and there have only been a few occasions where I felt that true tragedy struck. As I write I feel physically and emotionally exhausted, my body aches from lack of sleep and my heart hurts for the losses we’ve had this week…

The wedding was like something out of a fairytale. Martha looked every bit the glowing bride and darling Jack looked so handsome… I wasn’t the only one reaching for a hanky when the two read out their wedding vows: heartfelt, beautiful declarations of love that acknowledged their past, celebrated the present and looked forward to a happy future. My mind wandered back to my wedding to sweet Flynn, and I felt sure some part of him was watching down on us and smiling.

The reception was held in an old barn that the gang had done a wonderful job decorating – and gutsy Martha even had some cowboy boots on under her dress to get the boot-scootin’ started! Macca made a surprise visit, but not even his presence could dampen Martha’s spirits – no, it took another unwelcome visitor to do that… Thinking back, I did notice that Peter seemed particularly restless – always on his mobile, checking on Zoe’s progress. I just assumed he was being needlessly paranoid – the woman was locked in the back of a police van, unless she was a magician, she wasn’t getting free this time. How wrong I was…

Night had fallen when the nightmare began. Suddenly amidst the dancing and merriment a commotion broke out. I turned to see none other than Zoe, with Tracey, one of Peter’s colleagues, as her prisoner. As the unbelievable unfolded we discovered the horrible truth – Peter was right, someone from Summer Bay had been feeding Zoe information – Tracey! Right about then I noticed the smell of gas and then someone came in with a wedding cake with sparklers…

The explosion claimed the life of Detective Peter Baker. Almost everyone present suffered some form of injury – mostly burns, shock… Beth told me poor little Mattie has terrible scarring and Macca may have to have his arm amputated. Cassie has been spending almost all of her waking hours in the hospital – now, sympathy is one thing, but I am concerned about her attachment to him, I know he’s bad news. Ric told me he came clean with Cassie about his true feelings for her, but I don’t think he got the timing great – I don’t think Cassie is able to process information like that right now.

Jack’s life hung in the balance only to be saved by a liver transplant – from Peter. Dan is in a terrible way – at times like these I’m sure he is more than thankful for the support of lovely Leah.

And if this couldn’t get any worse I received even more shocking news today: a helicopter that Rachel organised to take burns victims to a top plastic surgeon in the city has dropped off the radar in a storm. Onboard were Martha, Kim, Kit, Robbie, Belle and the pilot. Perhaps we are panicking for nothing, perhaps the chopper merely lost radio contact and in the next few hours we’ll get word that it landed safely – but after the tragedy of this week I fear for the worse. I think Rachel is taking this particularly hard – Colleen told me her mum passed away a few days ago from a cardiac arrest in the hospital and now not only is Kim missing, but it was Rachel who organised it. I hope she can handle this, but in all honesty, it’s more tragedy than anyone can be expected to handle.

In a strange turn of events, Irene confided in me last night that Amanda is Belle’s birth mother! With all that’s going on I don’t think this has actually sunk in yet – some story about Amanda’s mother Kitty giving the baby up at birth and telling Amanda the baby died – most peculiar.Must go – the kids are home and we’re having a family night at home tonight – I think it’s important to keep your loved ones close in times such as these.

Love Sally.
