Sally’s life has changed forever now that Flynn has gone. She is a single mother to baby Pippa and her teenaged foster-children, Cassie and Ric. Although they are in for a tough time, they will survive as a family.
It's worth remembering some of Flynn's incredibly moving words about the important things in life.
"It's only now it's over that I understand what life's really all about. That each new dawn brings us a gift - a chance to cherish all the treasures we have and the greatest treasure we have is the one that's closest to us. But the irony is we often don't discover it until too late.
It's the one that takes a backseat to all those other important things we think about as we head off to work each morning. The career, the mortgage, the paycheck. Yet my greatest achievement was not my career. My greatest security was not the thought of a home paid off. My greatest comfort was not the paycheck at the end of the week. It was my family. My purest joy, my highest achievement, my constant source of love.
In many ways, life is a treasure we share with others. We mark the occasion not by reading out a list of the things a man cannot take with him, but by eulogising the true imprint he left behind on this earth. The virtues he radiated, the lives he touched, the lives he was touched by, his values, his family, his friends.
Though the gift of hindsight is a wonderful thing. I understand the pain of those who are not privy to its blessings. I understand that for the loved ones I've left behind, there are times when they are surrounded by people and yet feel utterly alone...searching in vain for a hand to cling to. Even when they find it, they must accept it is not always the hand they long for the most. And though I feel their pain, I don't weep, because I know the joy that is yet to come. I've seen the light that only shines at day's end.
For those left behind, sometimes it seems like the burden is too much to bear. But you have to go on with courage, regardless sometimes the heaviest burden is the one you can't see and it's all we can do to carry it with dignity.
It's only now it's over that I understand what life's really all about. It's about following your heart against the odds no matter the repercussions. It's about learning to trust again, even though those around us are still hiding secrets. It's about taking a chance and searching for answers, even when we're afraid of what we'll find, it's about facing up to our mistakes and believing in the future. But most of all, it's about love because when all is said and done, it's the one thing that never really dies."
Today families come in so many different forms. Whether yours is a 'traditional', 'single-parent', 'blended', 'adoptive', 'foster', 'same sex', 'multi-racial' or 'extended' family...it's all good. We all need the love and support of those around us, and the people within our family should never be taken for granted.
Remember Flynn's words, and don't leave it too late to understand what life's really about.
