Cheeky Cop on the Beat.

Summer Bay has always had its fair share of good-looking beach boys, ready to charm the ladies and land themselves in just the right amount of drama and danger. Now we can add another one to the list, Luke Jacobz.

Luke is channeling the spirit of cheeky cop Angelo, a police officer with the gift of the gab. “I have a lot in common with Angelo actually,” begins the charismatic cutie. “He’s a cheeky cop. He’s very confident. He’s not arrogant at all, it’s not as if he’s got attitude. He’s a confident guy, and he knows what he’s doing in the police force. He like the ladies. He’s outgoing and he’s always in a good mood. I had a friend message me the other night from down in Melbourne and he said ‘I didn’t actually see Angelo on the TV, I just saw Luke Jacobz’.”

Does he look familiar? That’s because Luke J has already graced our small screen, in hit shows Heartbreak High and Mcleod’s Daughters. “There’s a lot of similarities as far as being on set goes” explains the boy with the heart-melting grin. “It’s a little bit different being on video and not on film. Heartbreak High and Mcleod’s were all shot on film. But we’re up in Sydney and on the beach, so that’s all great. I haven’t actually acted in studio before – Heartbreak High and Mcleod’s were all shot on location, so it’s different working in a studio, but it’s great.”

Yep, the talented actor is settling into life well in Summer Bay, but unlike his character, he’s no outsider when it comes to the rest of the all-star cast. “A few of the cast I’ve met before,” he explains. “I knew Ada (Leah) and Christie (Kirsty) from years ago, and I’d known Lynne McGranger (Irene) for quite a few years as well. Todd Lasance (Aden) actually came to Mcleod’s and did a guestie last year so when I went into make-up on the first day, he walked in and was like ‘Oh, what are you doing here?’ I know a lot of the crew as well, in the studio and out on location.”

It’s been a fast-paced ride so far for Luke, unlike his previous acting experience, the filming of Home and Away is presenting a whole world of new challenges. “They do punch out a lot more on-air stuff than Mcleod’s and Heartbreak,” he says, expressing the mammoth amount of content the hard-working production team produce, “You go from one scene straight onto the next, so if you can actually get a handle on working in such quick conditions, you’ll be able to work anywhere. It’s great training."

Luke started a plumbing apprenticeship when he was 17, but then he landed a gig on Heartbreak High and knew straight away this is what he wanted to do. A variety of other jobs including retail and presenting became the “other jobs - the ones you do when you’re not acting”. However acting, Luke confirms, is what he now has his heart set on.

Luke has managed to squeeze quite a bit in during his time off, including travel. “I did a big tour of Europe in 2000, went over with a mate,” he recalls”. I loved Greece. We went island hopping over there for about two months, and that was just brilliant. You sort of wake up at lunchtime and have breakfast, then another meal at 7pm at night. Because it’s so warm over there, you stay up. The sun doesn’t set till 9.30pm, 10pm, so your body clock completely changes. There’s just this whole summer attitude, of sailing and surfing, it was just beautiful.

But I think my next holiday will be in the cold – go skiing somewhere. I also like snowboarding, if only because I fall over so much and there’s less to lose. With snowboarding you just lose your beanie, but with skiing you can lose your skis and your stocks and your beanie!” he laughs.

But when it comes to pastimes back home, Luke has an unusual hobby – lawn bowls! One mention of the term gets the handsome actor grinning ear to ear. “Love it! I’m actually heading home for a roll this afternoon – we’ve got a big game on tomorrow,” he laughs. “My best mate started it about a year ago and he rang me and said ‘You gotta try it’. I went and had a roll, and ended up staying for about five hours and now we go two or three times a week. Love it!”

So keep your eyes on cheeky cop Angelo everyone – according to Luke, there’s plenty of drama ahead… “There’s a bit of love,” he confirms. “He’s looking for the right one – He’s shopping around. He does fall for one of the girls in the Bay, but it might not be a two way street."
