Sam and Rory are back!
Previously on Home and Away: Good cop Jack cops a nasty bashing. Ends up in wheelchair. Gets body and soul healed by a sweet lady we like to call Sam Tolhurst (mostly because that’s her name). Jack and Sam get cozy. Jack and Sam become couple. Jack realises Sam is living a double life because her nasty drug-dealing ex-husband is out of jail and wants her dead. Gasp! Shock! OMG! Sam and her son Rory hit the road (again), on the run (again), leaving Jack broken-hearted (again).
Fast-forward a few months and Sam is nothing but a fond memory for Jacky-boy, who’s enjoying reconnecting with sort-of-not-really ex-wife Martha. Now that she’s kicked Cam to the curb and given up spending Saturday nights wrapped around a pole in a handful of sequins, the country girl with the mile-wide smile is enjoying getting reacquainted with her sort-of-not-really ex-hubbie… (Did someone say SKINNY DIP??? BEST. SCENE. EVER!!).
So now is really not the best time for Sam to pop up again – but she does!
We caught up with actress Jessica Chapnik to find out more about what’s been happening and what’s in store…
So Jess, what have you been up to in your time away from the Bay?
I went travelling with a band called Old Man River, which included a tour with the Violet Femmes! I had to leave the band to come back to the Bay. The band has taken off – they’re playing shows every day!
Was it hard to leave the band?
I didn’t expect it to be so hard! They just got signed to Sony so they’re pushing them like mad. They’ve been supporting everyone. It was possible to do it last year as it was just a weekend here and a weekend there, but now it’s all over the country, pretty much fulltime. But I’m happy to be back, acting is where my heart is.
Stay tuned to our Live ‘n’ Local special as Old Man River could be the next band featured and if so, then you could have a chance to see them and Jess in the recording studio!
We also caught up with the young actor playing Rory, Jack Rickard, whose replacing the actor who played Sam’s son the first time round.
How did you get into acting?
I was quite young – about four years old. My Mum was taking my two sisters to dancing class near an agency – they saw me and said, ‘Your son is very cute, you should get him into acting’! So she did!
What have you done before Home and Away?
I played the son of a nurse on All Saints (played by Jenny Baird) – he had all these problems and the mum had lots of relationships. Both Home and Away and All Saints are big deals for me! It’s great.
How do you find juggling school and acting?
At first it was quite challenging because it’s so busy here, and everyone else is working and getting through so much stuff, but I’m coping. My tutor has been getting loads of phone calls and emails from all my teachers giving her all the work I need to be doing – it’s good.
How much time do you have off?
Two days a week from here [the studio], so I’m pretty busy. Luckily I just live down the road so it only takes me five minutes to get to work!
So is being an actor what you want to do in the long-term?
I think it’s just one option for me. The others are being an international cricketing champion or a jazz artist. I’d like to learn the trumpet!

Angela: I really think that it isn't a good time for Rory and Sam to turn up. Martha and Jack's relationship is getting better and if she comes she might destroy it. I would like to see Sam help Jack and Martha get back together.
Rachael: Hey, i used to think it was a good idea that sam and rory came back, when
Martha was into Cam. But i reckon Jack and Martha are a better couple than
Jack and Sam. I hope Sam is over Jack by now and just willing to be friends,
and nothing more.
